Dear Diary

Dear Diary: What I read in April 2015

I feel like I accomplished a bit more this month than the last couple with three books read and another in good progress.

I started out the month with a book that was a Sun+ freebie; The Accidentby C.L. Taylor. I love free books simply because they push me out of my YA, chick-lit comfort zone and this is one of the times where it really paid off. The Accident is a fast paced psychological thriller about a woman whose daughter is in a coma and is convinced she won’t wake up until whatever secret she was keeping is discovered. It kept me hooked all the way through and I actually looked forward to my commute. Given that this is the authors first published novel I am seriously impressed and look forward to future offerings.

Next up A Day at the Office by Matt Dunn (another freebie this time from Galaxy chocolate wrappers last year!) which I would describe as a refreshing romance novel. It’s about a bunch of characters who work in the same office and the state of their love lives. Reading the initial chapter I found the similarities between Sophie and my own situation were startling but what struck me most about this book was the fact that the timeline lasts only a single day – Valentine’s Day. OK so it’s entirely unbelievable that all of this would happen in a single office on a single day but it’s fun and a little bit different to other romantic novels out there.

Finally I read something a bit different for me. As you all know I’m a massive nerd and love attending comic cons but I’m really not a huge fan of comic books. I find them difficult to get into and I think my OCD would lead me to have to go right back to the beginning which would be very expensive. That said my friend bought me Deadly Storm as a gift which is part of the Castle merchandising and I really loved it! The drawings are amazing but I did feel like the story lacked depth which I guess is to be expected when it’s in such a condensed form.

After reading it I broke my #TBR20 book buying ban this month and bought the next Nikki Heat novel for 99p on Kindle. It was too good a price to resist and it’s what I’m reading now.
