Dear Diary

Dear Diary: What I read in February 2015

I’ve spent this entire month slogging my way through one measly book; The Calling by James Frey and Nils Johnson-Shelton. This is the book that I was sent to review back in NOVEMBER and I’m only just getting round to reviewing it now. It’s a hefty tome of over 450 pages and packs quite a punch.

I can’t quite decide if I liked it or not. I loved the concept (it’s a bit Hunger Games-esque but also very, very different) but with so many players, each with their own story, it was hard to keep track of who was who and what was what which definitely impaired my enjoyment of the novel. I found all the bouncing around to be distracting and just as I was getting invested in one character the novel would change point of view and I’d lose interest in the former completely. Maybe this was deliberate so that you didn’t pick a favourite only for them to die but to be honest I just found myself wishing they would all hurry up and get on with it.

I believe that there’s due to be a further two novels and nine novellas released to complete the series and I’m not sure I have the patience to persist with that much story which is a shame because I think condensed down this would be so much more enjoyable.
