Last weekend I had the pleasure of visiting MyChocolate with a group of other bloggers and participate in one of their chocolate making workshops. After a bit of a faff getting there (I ended up at their previous premises in Chancery Lane rather than their shiny new location overlooking Regent’s Canal) I made it just in the nick of time.
MyChocolate was founded 8 years ago by the lovely Hannah after she quit university and used the remainder of her student loan to set up the business. Not something her parents were too thrilled about at the time I’m sure but I bet they are very proud of her now indeed! She started running chocolate workshops out of her living room and the company has gone from strength to strength from there.
The workbenches were laid out with everything we would need from utensils to decorations and even some tasters to nibble on.
Davis was our host for the morning, full of interesting facts and very funny to boot which helped us all feel at ease. He started out by having us test some different kinds of chocolate and determine the flavours and also which was the higher quality.
He then went through the process of making truffles with us (one part cream to two parts melted chocolate in case you were wondering) and gave us an impressive demonstration. Then it was over to us to replicate his efforts – ha!
Davis had made it look so very easy and it really wasn’t! The mixture sets very quickly so you have to knead it to keep it workable.
Once we had managed to squeeze out enough of those each it was time for the fun bit – dip and decorate! This was definitely the messiest bit and I ended up with chocolate on my forehead while others had it all over their clothing too.
I think you’ll agree chocolate making is a lot more work than you would expect it to be but totally worth the effort too.
We were even given little golden boxes to take our chocolates home in which really gave it that finishing touch!
Huge thanks to MyChocolate for having us and the lovely Lauren for organising! If you’d like to attend a MyChocolate workshop they have a Groupon offer running at the moment or if you’re not local to London why not check out their sister company The Chocolate Hedgehog which provides you will all that you need to throw a chocolate making party in your own home.
