Black & Blue, Waterloo

Fellow cosplayer Roxy and I met up on Thursday night after work for dinner and some cocktails while we waiting for one of our mutual friends to arrive for her whirlwind 24 hour trip to the city. (They had booked on the Harry Potter walking tour aftter Joanna had read my blog post about it!) Given that London was still in the midst of the tube strike Waterloo station was pretty manic but we slipped across the road to Black & Blue which was surprisingly quiet.

Inside is really modern with red leather booths and a some smaller tables as well. Luckily for us their fixed lunch menu is available until 7pm (£16 for 2 courses, £20 for 3) and they have a fairly impressive cocktail list as well. We both started off with a passionfruit & peach cocktail while we decided what we wanted to eat, I can’t remember the exact name and sadly they don’t publish their cocktail menu online for some reason but they were very good.

I wanted something healthy as a main as I was going to have pudding and while I was tempted by the warm chicken, avocado and walnut salad settled for the baked field mushroom and grilled vegetables topped with goat’s cheese which came served with fries instead. This was really, really good with two fat juicy flat mushrooms layered with sweet red pepper and sliced courgettes topped with a thick slice of goats cheese on each. Every bite was delicious and my only niggle was that there was just too much of it. Not a bad complaint to have!

IMG_5593I had specifically saved room for pudding and the warm chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream did not disappoint. It wasn’t too stodgy, the presentation was nice and it was just the right size to leave me full but not stuffed to bursting. We finished off our meal with another cocktail each (kiwi martini for me) and the total bill only came to £38 for each of us. Not bad at all for somewhere so close to one of London’s busiest train station and somewhere I’d be more than happy to visit again. They also have a bar area towards the back of the building as well so you can easily pop in for a couple of drinks even if you don’t want to have something to eat.
