One of the first places I heard rave things about when I moved to London was Wahaca for Mexican food but I’ve never had the opportunity to dine in as yet. However the other day while walking to Waterloo via the Southbank after work one day I decided to give their Street Kitchen a whirl.
Obviously the street kitchen doesn’t serve the full range of the menu but they do offer salads, tacos and burritos (which lets face it is what you really want anyway isn’t it?) Ever since my first Chipotle burrito in New York last year I’ve been looking for the equivalent in the UK and sadly Wahaca doesn’t quite rise to the challenge although it is good.
The staff members serving were extremely cheerful and coped beautifully with the queue build up serving multiple people at once. I settled on a chicken burrito with mild sauce all the trimmings and some extra guacamole to boot. The wrap was so packed I wasn’t quite sure how she was going to be able to roll it but she did. Of course this did mean that I made an absolute mess as bits fell out while I was trying to eat it!
It was nice but not amazing. Perhaps I had my hopes set too high or maybe I should have gone for the medium sauce rather than mild but I just thought it was missing something. For £6.50 it was great value though and I’d definitely pop in past again if I was in a hurry. They also have a second street kitchen in the Canary Wharf area.
