Our latest afternoon tea adventure was one of the best yet! Like the Ampersand Hotel the ever-changing themed menus at the Conrad St James caught our eye and we knew that we wanted to put their Summer in the City menu through its paces.
Afternoon tea is served in Emmeline’s, a spacious well-lit area just off from the hotels lobby where a harpist plays soft tinkly music throughout your visit. Despite it being very busy the area never felt crowded and in fact it was very private.
We ordered our teas which took a little while to come but thankfully they weren’t quite as tardy with the champagne! Unlimited chilled Mumm champagne was included in the price of our tea and the staff made sure that our glasses were never anywhere near empty.
As you may have figured out the theme for the tea was Summertime and the savouries captured this perfectly. A tiny BBQ chicken and coleslaw wrap, a shotglass of prawn cocktail, smoked salmon on rye bread and egg mayonnaise in a brioche bun.
There were too different kinds of scone; plain and pineapple and while I might have been a bit cautious at first I found the pineapple ones to be truly delicious! The addition of lime curd to the usual selection of cream and jam didn’t hurt either.
As usual though it was the sweet selection that stole the show! The pina colada jelly mocktail was absolutely delightful and very fruity. The passionfruit and coconut bounty cake was the perfect blend of the two flavours (I’m not a fan of coconut so was afraid that it would be overpowering) while the mint and mojito flavoured macaron was baked to perfection.
The only thing I wasn’t too keen on was the one I was most excited for, the chocolate mousse mini cream cones. Don’t get me wrong they were absolutely delicious but after the light fruity flavours of the rest of the treats the chocolate seemed heavy and out-of-place.
It was a lovely relaxing enviroment and despite the 90 minute time limit it never felt like we were being rushed in fact the topped up our glasses one last time just before presenting us with the bill which we couldn’t actually finish we were already so full of bubbles!
Thanks to afternoontea.co.uk we were able to book the free flowing Champagne Summer in the City afternoon tea at the Conrad St James’ for a 25% discount and you can get the same deal on their Autumn Bramble menu.
